Description

A Young Doctor's Notebook is one of Mikhail Bulgakov's most popular short story collections. Originally, the collection contained seven stories, written in 1925-1926, about the adventures of the young doctor Vladimir Bomgard, of whom Bulgakov himself was the prototype. Each story is inspired by Bulgakov's own experiences as a newly qualified doctor in 1916-1918, in a small rural hospital in the Smolensk Governorate. Many editions of these Notes also include the 1927 story Morphine because it is set in the same time period and environment.

In 2012, Alex Hardcastle directed A Young Doctor's Notebook, a four-episode TV series based on these stories for the British television channel Sky Arts 1. The older Vladimir Bomgard is played by Jon Hamm (Don Draper in Mad Men), the younger by Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter). Radcliffe is an avid fan of The Master and Margarita. Due to the success of the first season, a second season of four episodes directed by Robert McKillop followed in 2013.
